DA62 Annual Mechanic/Center preference

Post by Urquhart »

Had a DA40 for several years. Local A&P mechanic performed the annuals/maintenance. With the complexity and Diesel engines of the 62, is a Diamond service center preferred or can a generic A&P perform the annuals?

While legally any A&P with inspection authority (IA) can sign off on an annual inspection, I would strongly suggest you find a shop with Austro diesel engine experience. There are multiple Austro-specific potential trouble spots involving coolant leaks, turbochargers and their boost controllers, high-pressure fuel pumps, gearboxes, etc. to be inspected -- that are very different from a typical Lycoming or Continental avgas engine. It's also important for the A&P to be familiar with the Austro Engine Wizard software to download and review engine log files for faults.

If you have a local A&P or shop with whom you already have a great relationship, consider encouraging them to take Diamond's one-week training course. Some of these courses have been conducted virtually, eliminating the need to travel to Diamond's factory in Canada.

If I had a DA62 at KANB I would be flying it to KFTW for the annual.

I agree with using the service centers - especially if the 62 is still under warranty. After warranty expiration, you have more flexibility but you will want someone trained on the engine with all the correct documentation. That’s my plan after delivery… to use Premier in Fort Worth initially.

The nearest approved Diamond Service Center is a 12 minute flight from my home airport. But for various reasons I'm willing to fly three hours to FTW for any significant service on the 62.

Diamond Canada is offering free access to their online maintenance courses. Probably a limited time offer as I understand that they will be going back to in person as techs need hands on experience.

A local mechanic and I are taking the twins course starting Sept. 26th. It is online only. The brochure says the cost is $2,500 but they actually charge only $25 each.

I too have made the change in MX providers; 7-8 hrs block time round trip for the peace of mind for Premier @ FTW.
