Oil filter availability

Post by Lance Murray »

Well it seems oil filters are becoming a statistic of covid and supply chain issues. I have had oil filters on order since July with nothing to show for. I suppose this has to be hitting flight schools pretty hard. What are people doing to get these filters?

The Champions, especially, seemed to disappear off the face of the earth. Fortunately my mechanic scored (and is hoarding) a bunch of Tempests last summer so I'm good.

If you scout around the various suppliers you may be able to find one or the other available. I've seen others succeed this way. Don't just wait on Spruce or any other single source.

In addition to Spruce for various stuff, including oil filters, there’s:

Spencer (currently shows CH48110-1 in stock FWIW)
Sky Geek

I've had a DA40 Tempest oil filter on back order at Aircraft Spruce since September 8th. It's supposed to ship now on November 14th - sigh...

Ordered a Tempest 6-pack from Spruce on 8/17. Saw that they just shipped out on 10/27, 10 weeks on backorder! Hope they don't get lost in transit ;-)

If you fly often and do frequent oil changes, there are some benefits to using the PMA’d Challenger permanent oil filters (manufactured by K&P). The elements last 5 years, are easily cleaned and do not need to be cut open like the throwaway style. Yes they are expensive, but the Champions and Tempest filters are too. I have them on both of my experimental aircraft and I am quite happy with their performance.

They are available at Aircraft Spruce and probably the other suppliers as well.

You can always buy one on Ebay (no gouging going on there). Champion CH48110-1 Oil Filter "Brand New" C $250.00 for one.

On the bright side it does appear that Champion is starting to ramp up production as well as Tempest. Unfortunately the Challenger filter systems are as far away as the paper filters are (last I saw was March/23)

The 48111 is an equivalent to the 48110 just an inch longer if you have the room.

We are operating 4-5 Seminoles and 2 Cessna's that use the CH48110. We figured on a usage of up to 15 or so filters a month and were down to 6 filters at one point. I managed to beg, borrow and promise my first born to scrounge some between August and October.
