Re: Avionics upgrade
Having done a lot of practicing with the GPSS as mediated by the Aspen, I'm really happy with what is kind of a kludge. I say kludge because the KAP140 doesn't do GPSS. One puts the AP in HDG mode and the Aspen comes up with headings to make the AP comply. In addition to the obvious (flying holds, DME arcs, etc.) in GPSS + HDG (or APR) mode it seems to include anticipation of needed adjustments for crosswinds during course intercept and tracking. Single button toggling of GPSS coupled with single-push heading bug synchronization are nice implementation features.

Re: Avionics upgrade
335 + stratus is a good idea, thanks Rich! I already have the stratus so just need 335 now. I’ll investigate. A system that only works with the US ground based system will work ok for me as most of my flying is near enough to the border. It covers me for all flying in the US and if there is no coverage in farther parts of Canada it doesn’t matter too much as there is no legal requirement at this time for adsb out in Canada.

Re: Avionics upgrade
To close the loop I ended up going with the uavionix adsb out wing beacon. $3,100 from Aircraft Spruce. Seems to work just fine in the US and southern parts of Canada and simple to install except the integrated red nav light is a lot less bright than the incandescent light it replaced. That and a portable stratux for weather and adsb in with wifi connectivity to ForeFlight and I’m all set.
For further excitement I found a gns530waas unit at Brant Aero so my gns530 non waas that needs a $3,000 repair is instead getting upgraded to a newer waas unit for $11k usd.

Re: Avionics upgrade
Just to clarify, the 530W does requires a different GPS antenna than the non-WAAS for proper operation. I assume the shop took care of that?

Yes, thanks for pointing it out. That’s an all in price from an experienced shop. They have the plane now so hopefully it all goes well.

Re: Avionics upgrade
Derek: How did you deal with the requirement for the rearward-facing white wingtip position light using the uAvionix unit? The lack of this light, and the difficulty/expense of fabricating one led me to go with the GDL82 for ADS-B out.Derek wrote: ↑Sat Nov 19, 2022 2:59 pm To close the loop I ended up going with the uavionix adsb out wing beacon. $3,100 from Aircraft Spruce. Re: Avionics upgrade
Hi,
I just want to have your opinion on replacing my electric AI and my electric directional by 2 GI-275.
I have a full steam gauge installation with a GNS430 (non wasa) and no autopilot.
Only flying VFR.
Thank you.

Arnauld - The GI275 seems to be more than you need for VFR/no autopilot. If they are certified in Europe you might consider the AV-30C, which comes in both attitude indicator and directional gyro forms -- https://uavionix.com/product/av-30-certified/
