Radar-ready vs. installed GWX70

Post by MackAttack »

My 62 is being delivered in January; I opted to have it delivered “radar-ready” and NOT have the GWX70 installed for delivery, since I would be going back to replace it with the 8000 when I did the NXi Phase 3 upgrade. That’s an alternative that Diamond is making available to 62 customers who are taking delivery before certification of Phase 3 and the GWX8000, as I understand it (I think one other owner on this board is doing the same thing).

I can survive with ADSB and XM weather for a few months … I’m familiar with the GWX70 as I have it in my Piper M600 and my understanding is that the 8000 is light-years ahead in terms of ease of use and clarity of presentation (in the horizontal scan at least). Likely worth the wait and the $$$ if you intend to fly your 62 in IMC regularly.

Cheers

This is an interesting idea. I might want to do the same. My delivery date is supposed to be March, so it would not be too bad to wait a few months to have the upgraded radar.

I had to push for it via my dealer Premier; probably better to have that discussion sooner rather than later if you want to take that approach. We started talking to Diamond about it back at OSH for example. Good luck!

My plane is also due in March and I also made an arrangement to have the plane delivered either with the GWX75, or as Joel calls it "radar ready".

I was advised today that the cost to upgrade from GWX75 (which will become standard fit) to GWX8000 is €10,500 - it's not loose change but probably worth it for what most people think is a very significant upgrade.

We should probably ask Chris to split this off into a separate thread since it's only marginally related to Phase III.

Continuing the hijack... What quote did you get for GWX75 vs GWX70?

My order (June 22) was based on the GWX70, the UK distributor advised (following the Diamond update re Phase III) that the GWX75 will succeed the ordered GWX70 and the GWX8000 would be at additional cost. I guess that means the 75 is the same price as the 70.

Yep you are paying for the basic radar one way or the other; I am choosing to pay a little less up front vs. having to exchange the 70 for either a 75 or 8000. If I was getting a 75, it would be simpler as there is no hardware change but the 75 won’t ship until Phase III ships.

I’m told the scenario if P3 is not ready, is the wiring harness is installed at the factory, then P3 and the 75 by the DSC with parts supplied by Diamond. No reason to buy the 8000 license from Diamond.

Be good to know what the licence cost will be to compare you would have thought that GWX75 plus upgrade licence would be more then GWX8000 but Diamond are quite greedy on "mark-up".
