DA42's in Aero Clubs

Post by hutton.brighton »

Have any owners leased their DA42s to aero clubs in Canada or the east coast in the US? I'm wondering what clubs and what the procedures and returns might be for leasing to a club.

There are two sets of considerations: those that apply to any lease-back arrangement and those that are specific to the DA42 (or any other Diamond diesel-powered airplane).

In the Diamond-specific category, having a well-understood approach to maintenance (and associated costs) is essential. Who will do the MX, and where will they get the needed parts (if a Diamond Service Center is not servicing your plane.) This is particularly true if your plane is unique to the club. In a club-use scenario, your plane will be "for hire," and you'll need to budget for 100-hour inspections ("mini-annuals") in addition to the required 100-hour oil changes.

It's also crucial that pilots and their instructors learn the details about operating the aircraft and its engines. (What are the check-out requirements?). "Lot of ME experience" is not the complete story unless it's in a DA42. Even then, there are differences between operating a DA42-TDI (Thielert) and DA42NG (Austro). Preventing misfuelling is essential if your plane is the only one taking Jet-A.

General leaseback concerns: contract, pilot qualifications, insurance, scheduling (esp. if you're planning to fly the plane yourself), and financials (pricing, club percentage cut, expected flight hours/year, etc.)

The goal is "no misunderstandings, no surprises."
