on this note I picked up one of these from the site shared on this forum, and while someone mentioned it takes some pushing to get it to latch, I can't _at all_ get it to stick. I really feel like I'm going to break the MFD. Is there some trick?

There's no 'latching' mechanism. You just need to make sure the cutout inside the knob matches the shaft. You may need to jiggle a bit while pushing.

When I tried to replace a knob that kept falling off I looked closely at the SHAFT and noticed there was a small metal keeper still remaining on it. If you do not remove this there is no way you will get the knobs to go on no matter how hard you push. If you have a new knob this keeper is probably already installed preventing you from installation.

The only individual knob they sell is in fact the range knob because it's the only knob on the GCU - 430-00035-10 ($25ish)
Additionally whenever they send a PFD or MDF back to Garmin for service, they will replace all damaged knobs. Garmin charges a flat fee for all repairs to those panels so you'll pay the same ~1,900 (IIRC) for a broken switch as you would if you took a hammer to the screen. Hence a savvy shop will pull off all the knobs before returning to Garmin thereby providing a full set of new knobs for their customer, and amassing a stockpile of good-but-used knobs. Win win.

I met the RSG guys at FlightSimExpo a few years ago and asked about it. They said that during design they had wanted to use the real Garmin knobs, but they were so horrendously expensive that they decided to 'design their own', which I took to mean they purchased 'similar' ones.

Speaking of which, how does one go about ordering a replacement joystick? (GCU - 430-00035-10) I can't find them on Sportys or AircraftSpruce. Does anyone know if the ones for Cessna or Cirrus, with the same part number, are identical?

Thanks to the board, I got one of the range knobs delivered from Sarasota, before the hurricane came thru. Now, to the installation. The replacement part seems to have a metal ring inside, but the part that broke does not. Any ideas?

The original knob also had a metal ring inside. Chances are it is still on the shaft and you just didn't notice it. You will need to remove it from the shaft before you can install the new knob!
