Source for the DA40 plastic brake hose holders?

Post by Ultrapilot1 »

Anybody know where to get those small white plastic brake hose clip holders that hold the hose to the landing gear? Mine have deteriorated and are falling off and also falling apart. They are also used on the DA20.

In the DA40 parts catalog, it shows a Diamond part number of 420420/1 for the "Brake Hose Clamp". About 5 years ago they were $15 each from Diamond.

A letter sent to Diamond Tech support this year:

The current batch of white plastic clamps that hold the brake line to the MLG Struts are failing at installation.
Part number 420420_1 CLAMPS are so brittle that the small end that clips over the brake line are breaking when the line is inserted. Our technicians estimate that two new clamps are broken for every one clamp that is successfully installed.

We are guessing that there has been a change in manufacturer at some point.

I notice that the current batch have a mat finish as opposed to previous (and much stronger) clamps that had a gloss finish.

I think the price is the same but the quality is lacking in the new holders. I tried one while investigating the issue and actually broke it trying to install the brake hose in the clip.

There appears to be a change in the design of this part. Look carefully at the profile of the 2001 part on my airplane:

Admittedly, not the best photos, but you can see that there is a lot more mass in the area that the brake line snaps into.

Is it still under the same part number?

Paul:

I have no idea. My bound parts manual doesn't even have that part listed, since the DA-40s up to SN: 40.023 had metal brake lines! If I use the online parts manual and put in my SN it gives me the same part number listed earlier: 420420/1, so the part used on my aircraft may have been superseded.

I believe that the picture that I posted was the newest form of the clamp. The older clamps we had for the DA20's were a lot more robust than what they are selling now.

Yes, they do look flimsy...

Something like this might work:

... but not being an Experimental, you would have to convince your A&P to sign it off as a minor modification (which it is).

$145!! Yikes! I thought $15 for a simple little plastic clip was ridiculous!

Get a roll of silicone fusion tape. Works great and looks fine.
