G1000 and 8.33 frequencies missing

Post by Jean » Wed Mar 13, 2019 9:30 am

Hello,
I have an issue with Database update on G1000.
Since last update (March), I don't have the 8.33 kHz frequencies available anymore on the WPT pages.
I contacted Jepp to get a new upload file, which they gave me with some instructions to reload the Database:
I have reset your download counter and provided an extra. The extra download is there in case the issue persists and you have to contact Garmin and they instruct you to reload. This is to say do not program the card twice from the same download.

To see this download please clear the cache in JDM. To clear your cache go to the JDM menu in the top left -> Tech Support -> clear cache. It will ask you if you are sure you want to delete local data then have you log in again. Afterwards, please transfer the data to your device again. When you get to the unit it may not want to update the NavData. Attempt it once but if the unit skips updating power it off, then with the Nav card inserted hold the second from the left soft key in while booting up. This will allow you to fully reinstall the database into the unit.

If issues persist I recommend you contact Garmin to troubleshoot unit display issues.
It did not work (there is no softkey before startup and pushing the 2nd left hardkey doesn't do anything). So I called my avionics shop and had this answer:
Please find attached the Service Advisory 1865A from Garmin.
Here you can see that the G1000 PFD-MFD (GDU) softw. version should be 15.10 or higher
As far as I can see, has N446DC G1000 softw version 0321-22 this is the Highest version available for a non-Waas DA40-180. This gives a GDU(PFD-MFD) softw. 9.15
(for Waas equipt DA40-180 0321-23 is the highest available softw this has GDU softw. 12.05)
In both cases there is no solution. There is no softw available for a DA40-180 to display the 8.33khz frequencies, Sorry !!!!!!!.
The Softw. should come from Diamond.
Does anyone have the same issue ?

More info from my avionics shop
According to garmin because of the extra data (character) Jeppessen split the Navigation DB in 2 parts.
The new 8.33 frequencies where moved to the second half (that also incl the VFR reporting points)
The “old “ software versions of Garmin will not work with this new part of the jeppesen DB
(this also incudes, all GNS4xx(W)and 5xx(W) units)

That explains why I lost a bunch of VFR reporting points. That's a tremendous drag. Is that true if you use Garmin to update the database?

With legacy G1000 GDU 15.x, Garmin started using 2 different NavData databases, regardless of whether you got your NavData subscription from Garmin vs. Jepp. This drove me nuts when I originally upgraded my DA42-VI to GDU 15 that could no longer read the NavData files on my SDcards. It took awhile to figure out what had happened because Garmin hadn't documented the change (in 2015 if I recall).

The issue is that the original NavData files are limited by older G1000 software to something like 4 Mbytes, and this file size has become too small to include all of the airports, new waypoints, etc. that needed to be included -- particularly for international subscriptions. In some cases the smaller database file size could be accommodated by excluding runways below a certain length.

After the change, G1000s with older software will only read the smaller (original size) NavData file on the card, whereas G1000s with GDU 15.X and above (e.g., NXi with GDU 20.X) can only read the new larger file with additional information. But regardless of which G1000 software is included on your aircraft, you'll find both NavData files loaded on your SDcard(s) as part of your NavData subscription.

Forgive my ignorance, but are you talking about nav waypoint data or communication frequencies?

Are you sure you have that right? My GNS cards are 16 MB (yes MEGA bytes) and the nav data subscription updates are about 7 MB.

Yes, Megabytes. Remember that Garmin introduced the G1000 with this NavData file size limitation back in 2004: 15 years ago!

Yes -- all of the NavData information associated with airspace, navigational aids, waypoints, airports, etc. This is the info that's updated every 28 days. It was possible to take the latest NavData files, rename them, and use them with Garmin's G1000 PC simulator for the DA40. It's amazing how much info Garmin or Jepp can pack into such a small file size.

Still - the GNS WAAS nav data cards had to be bumped to 16 MB - in 2006. I don't recall what they were before than, it might've been 4. And there's all manner of stuff the GNS lacks, such as airways.
