Quiz du jour

Post by Rich »

Herewith my instrument panel. It fails to fulfill a particular FAA regulation due to something missing and has been so for years. I corrected the deficiency today. Who'll get it first 8-) ?

OK, too easy. Yep, that's it. The thing disappeared years ago when I still had the glare-shield compass in the plane and I never noticed. Nor have any of the numerous guys that have done annuals on the plane since. I swung the compass yesterday and created a new one. Items of interest:

1. This compass has a really specialized tool for calibrating the thing. And it's absurdly tiny (translation: easy to lose).
2. After I swung the compass I got to wondering how recently was the compass rose here at Prineville checked? Nobody seemed to know. I checked it against this iPhone app I have and the rose agrees with that, so I guess I'm good  .

The only reason I noticed was the fact that I had to actually use my compass last year routinely for navigation when my KG-102A and autopilot were both Tango Uniform at the same time. My correction card kept falling out of the little holder - I finally glued it in. Flew with my compass as the primary directional instrument (other than the GPS...). It was actually good practice.

Speaking of missing placards...

Although it isn't an FAA requirement, I have had the 406 MHz ELT installed for 8 years, I didn't put on the placard until the last Annual. Good info to have handy, just in case you get a spurious activation...

Interesting coincidence, Steve. I actually had the same omission on my ELT sticker until just a few weeks ago

Hello,

Your topic allows me to ask a question about the compass, but I didn't want to open a thread only for that :)
I lately bought from a Salvage DA40 a Pegasus compass (the one that is installed in the DA40).
My idea was to remove the one on the glare shield (for visibility and aesthetic), and replace it with the Pegasus.
The combination that I want to make was to put the compass in the place of the timer/chrono on the very left and move the timer/chrono below the T&B.
When I tried this, it was fine, but when I close the canopy the compass was magnetized by the structure of the canopy… So I aborted.

Do you have an idea of how I can do? I can still place the compass below the T&B, but it is not the place where I want it to be .

Arnaud.

That's interesting. There shouldn't be any ferrous metal in that part of the canopy. I put my CO detector/clock combo in that location, my compass is still on the glare shield. No matter where you place the compass, you will have to "swing" it.

I had the same thoughts. The only thing that comes to mind is the cable that runs from the handle around inside the canopy to the other side. And yes, you need to swing it. And with this compass (which I have) it's a very unusual (and tiny) tool you must have to do so.
