I just heard from Glenn Lawler that after 20 Jan 2020 Continental Motors will no longer be making parts for the 1.7 engines.

More bad news for the TDI fleet this year. First it was the loss of John Weber, with his great 7 day a week / North American time zone support and now this - ugh!

In Europe, the 1.7 engines have to be replaced after 12 years, so there can't be many left to manufacture parts for. Is it different in the US?

In the U.S. under part 91 one can fly the engine til it wears out. T.B.O./T.B.R. is only for commercial ops. though you need to obtain a "hold harmless" from Continental to run past T.B.R. Your shop should be able to help with that.
I would like to know how many 1,7 s are still in use out there.

And Continental will not give a hold harmless wavier for the 1.7 engines. Tried in 2015.

Dave, I am told there is one more 1.7 out in Bozeman, MT. So that makes two so far.A very small class.

To be fair, they haven't said they won't sell any parts for the 1.7, but rather that the availability going forward is unknown. We were already seeing that this year with long lead times for LEPs and the suggestion from them that it would be faster if we sent ours in advance to have inspected and returned.

"As the Centurion 1.7 has not been manufactured since January 2007 and has not been available as a newly manufactured engine either, we would like to inform you that with effect of January 2020 we will not be able to provide the full spare parts support for the Centurion 1.7.
Spare parts that are still available from our stock will, of course, be provided for Centurion 1.7 operators. We thank you for your kind understanding that neither will new spare orders nor new production orders be made for the Centurion 1.7. Hence, please be aware that not all spare parts for Centurion 1.7 will be available from us effective January 2020."

I know of one in Chino, CA and one in Camarillo, CA - both low time.

Dave what is an LEP I cannot figure that one out.
That was my understanding ; Conti. would have some 1.7 parts until they do not.

Not your fault, it stands for "life extension program" which is a rare term I believe Thielert coined to say that the parts can be inspected and returned to service rather than scrapped.

It just seems that all of the accessories could at least be reworked if you send yours in advance - what consumable parts could they possibly need that they can't get anymore? I asked and they didn't say, just referred me back to their notice again. The only problem as I see it would be if when you send yours in they determine the cores aren't viable so then you're stuck because no rotables available, but I've never heard of this happening.
