With the GDU version 12.03 (DA40 TDI) I am using large Sandisk SDHC cards of 8 and 16Gbyte without problems.

It looks like Garmin may be trying to improve the proces.

In theory it can now do:
Automatic Downloads
Database Manager can automatically download the latest database updates so they are ready to be installed without waiting for a download
It is still pretty clumsy in that it seems to want to contact the Garmin website before writing to the SD card, and there doesn't seem to be a way to trigger the download manually. It's supposed to automatically download updates in the background whenever they become available. We'll see later this month if the next update is simpler.
