With the GDU version 12.03 (DA40 TDI) I am using large Sandisk SDHC cards of 8 and 16Gbyte without problems.

I'm also using 8 Gb Sandisk cards and they work just fine. 2007 DA40 with GDU v12.05

It looks like Garmin may be trying to improve the proces.
In theory it can now do:
It is still pretty clumsy in that it seems to want to contact the Garmin website before writing to the SD card, and there doesn't seem to be a way to trigger the download manually. It's supposed to automatically download updates in the background whenever they become available. We'll see later this month if the next update is simpler.Automatic Downloads
Database Manager can automatically download the latest database updates so they are ready to be installed without waiting for a download
