As I do every January I looked into the various tools to check out certain accidents from 2021. Some observations:
- There was 1 fatal DA40NG accident in the US last year. The first fatal Diamond diesel-powered accident in the US I’ve ever seen. Worldwide it’s a far different story.
- Worldwide, there 3 fatal Diamond accidents in 2021: 1 DA42NG and 1 DA20 in Europe.
- All 3 of these accidents look to me like stall-spins during training exercises.
Some ancillary things I stumbled across:
- The new NTSB CAROL database now appears to go back to 1999.
- One of the 6 Cirrus US fatal accidents last year has been scrubbed from both the NTSB and FAA accident/incident database. This happened in December 2021 and involved the death of the CEO of MyGoFlight. It was widely published at the time. I surmise there is some kind of litigation keeping any investigation under wraps. You can get some information on the ASN accident wiki.

Accidents are a great learning resource. While the NTSB preliminary and final reports are illuminating (especially the appendix's to the final report) I have always found Peter Garrison's deep dives into the accidents he reports on to be very useful.

Re: Checking on accidents in the accident databases
There are those that complain about the new CAROL search tool. I find it superior to the old one. Here is an example of using the tool to find all US non-fatal DA40 accidents. This was a tedious process on the old tool.
2002 DA40-180: MT, PowerFlow, 530W/430W, KAP140, ext. baggage, 1090 ES out, 2646 MTOW, 40gal., Surefly, Flightstream 210, Orion 600 LED, XeVision, Aspen E5
