Rich and team, thanks for your effort developing this! I’ve purchased one and the Bose adapter and look forward to putting it to use.

Before I use it however, could you help provide any peace of mind about using the aircraft electrical system for this purpose, where maybe it wasn’t designed?

By pulling power from the audio jacks, is there any risk of interference or worse, electrical shorting and damaged components? Asked another way, is there any additional safety or wiring added if one were to install a tso approved LEMO jack or is the internal wiring the same?

The power supplied to the mike jacks and tapped by these adapters was intended for exactly this purpose, but the implementation is only usable by certain headsets no longer on the market. These adapters mirror the connections used by Diamond to supply power to the built-in LEMO jacks in the newer airframes. They just tap the same circuit we all have, connecting from that "tip power" lead to pin #1 on the LEMO connector, with outher connections in parallel. This is done right behind the panel whereas this adapter approach does it right outside the panel. This from the DA62 AMM:

I just realized that Diamond's LEMO panel installation (which mirrors Bose's diagram for aftermarket installation) has a weakness. Those of us that use these adapters because there is no LEMO installation do not have this worry.

First of all, other than the ANR power lead, each of the headset jack positions has separate wiring into the audio panel. This allows direct control of isolation and so forth.

With The LEMO panel installation in, say, the DA62 (again, mirroring the BOSE diagram found in the A20 manual and elsewhere) any given dual plug and LEMO jack suite share the same connection to the audio panel and are both simultaneously usable. This allows, for example, the pilot and some back seat passenger mike/speakers to share a circuit. This means altering the impedance of both mike and speaker circuit all the time. And when pilot hits PTT, the back seat passenger mike is also hot to the radio.

I don't know where the physical jacks for the front/rear seats are located in these installations such that the above situation this would be an easy mistake to make, but it's something to be avoided.

Used my adaptor and re-built to LEMO LightSpeed Headset today for the first time. Worked exactly as advertised. It appears the power comes through the avionics bus. Thanks again for this great idea and execution. Bernie

Bernie, we (Steve, Rich and I) appreciate the update. Enjoy your flights without "battery anxiety" :) .

Dave, did you ever figure out whether that resistor had blown?

Not yet. My plane is in for its annual inspection, and I'm letting the maintenance shop diagnose the loss of LEMO headset power.

I just swapped my dual-plug Bose X for a LEMO Bose X. Like the LS Zulu3 LEMO it has no battery compartment. So both these models will be passive when used in aircraft that lack powered-LEMO capability. Of course the Bose X is long out of production in either configuration.

And, Rich, does your LEMO Bose X work as expected in your DA40 with the Steve/Rich Powered LEMO Adapter?
