JR Air Filter Replacement

Post by Chip&Al »

Airplane is going in for annual in a few days and my I/A is wanting me to pre-order a replacement air filter. This is my first annual and am trying to figure out either how to source a JR filter or a replacement that we can use. I’ve tried to search on the Brackett site, but it refers to a Diamond Service Center…

Search the forum by "filter" and you'll pull up a couple of threads on the JR filter. Here's one on how to clean them -- viewtopic.php?p=47389&hilit=filter#p47389 They are made in France and difficult to source, but don't have to changed often.

Not quite the answer you're looking for, but in eight years of ownership we have never replaced our air filter, only cleaned it. Each time it's cleaned it looks good as new. No issues to report otherwise. Perhaps your filter is in worse shape than mine, but if it's still working I think it's fine to just clean. Is there a particular reason your IA wants to replace it? There is nothing in the AMM that requires replacement.

I had to replace mine around 15 years old because the rubber collar somehow got torn. But other then visible physical damage there is no stated reason for replacement. Maybe if oil analysis shows excessive silicon.

Appreciate the follow up. I’d read that thread; really wanting to see if there is a replacement filter that is a little easier to source - like a Brackett or something like that.

Good to know. Oil analysis is fine. My IA said a Brackett BA6108 may fit. We’re going to be dissecting everything this weekend and will update if we end up having to R&R the filter.

Chip- What was the resolution of your air filter issue? My DA40 is in annual right now and the mechanic says the air filter is trashed and needs replacement. Thanks. Bernie

SouthTec has them, they just put a new one on my plane. Though I'd encourage your mechanic to see if it can be cleaned if serviceable otherwise.

I replaced my air filter at my last annual because part of it was torn. I was at a Diamond Service Center so they knew how to order it. I’ve tried ordering Diamond specific parts directly from Diamond but they weren't helpful. I think they want you to order from a service center. For general parts like the Weldon electric fuel pump or tires I’ve ordered through Aircraft Spruce. My service center is Midwest Aero in Peru, IL.
