New AD for DA40 Cargo Net
I just received an email from the FAA concerning a new AD for the DA40 cargo net. You can read it here: https://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guid ... -13-06.pdf

Re: New AD for DA40 Cargo Net
I saw this the other day, but fortunately am not affected. Unless you've replaced a baggage net since December 2015 or have a plane manufactured since then, you should be fine. The AD lists the cost of a new net at $382. I'm sure that excludes shipping from Canada.
The following are “affected baggage nets” for purposes of this AD:
(1) Quick fix baggage net assembly part number (P/N) D44-2550-90-00 with a date of manufacture of December 2015, November 2016, or March 2017; and
(2) Quick fix baggage net assembly P/N D67-2550-90-00_02 with a date of manufacture of June 2016.

Re: New AD for DA40 Cargo Net
Do many people actually use their cargo net? The back seats are pretty high and limit any significant forward movement of lighter cargo in the back. I imagine I would only use the net if I were to load a heavier piece of cargo back there (due to the flimsy seat retention pins), but that would probably put me out of W&B anyway. I usually load heavier luggage in the back seat to stay in balance. I don't see the cargo net on the mandatory equipment list so wouldn't that mean this is an optional event?

I always use it. I have a tool kit, tow bar, and headset bag storing the rear seat headsets back there all the time, and of course, bags when I'm traveling. I once had a loose tow bar jump up and crack a rear window in a rental 172 during some unexpected clear air turbulence...

Re: New AD for DA40 Cargo Net
I have the original style net so this doesn't apply BUT being an AD it needs to be dealt with at annual as N/A.
I very rarely use it. The old style "clamping" latches, in particular, make it a pain to deal with. And access to the front locker area is impeded by the mere presence of the front attaching loops.

When I had my two little boys in the back I used the cargo net pretty regularly until they were larger. Then I had more experience and understood the chances of something moving and what we would need to do about it.

That's one way to control the kids on a long trip.Colin wrote: Thu Jul 07, 2022 5:33 pm When I had my two little boys in the back I used the cargo net pretty regularly until they were larger.
