Diamond shipped lots of NXi airplanes with 63W's, but then required the 64 for "phase 2". Phase 2 being totally a Diamond invention.

I suppose that's good news for legacy owners looking to get a WAAS upgrade. I think many more NXI Phase 1 owners will upgrade to Phase 2 once Diamond and Garmin release the next version of the system software (aka 'Phase 3').
In hindsight, it seems that Diamond (and Cessna/Textron) made the same mistake twice, which was to introduce a 'generationally incomplete' solution (e.g, non-WAAS/KAP140, NXI Phase 1), whereas Cirrus waited and introduced what would become Garmin's generationally complete G1000 or NXI system (Perspective, Perspective+).
