Is this unusual method of measuring fuel remaining related to the recommended procedure of pumping from Aux when 15 gals are showing (or 17 if over water)?

It's really up to the pilot -- you just want to know that you have access to sufficient Aux tank fuel before passing any "point of no return" on long legs over water or inhospitable terrain.

I made the inference that the drawings in the respective AMM's for the DA40L/42NG/62 are isometric and to scale. Specifically fig.2 for the 40 and fig.1 for the others. It should be noted that fig.1 for the DA40 is specifically depicted to NOT be to scale.

I also make the assumption that the cross sections of all three chambers are the same for any given model. Therefore the ratios of the volumes of each chamber to the total volume would be the same as the ratio of the length of each to the total of the length of all three.

I tested these hypotheses by comparing the stated individual volumes of each of the three DA40 to calculated volumes as a fraction of their total. Within the ability to measure the drawing, the calculated volumes matched up pretty well.

Armed with this approach I measured and calculated the numbers for the DA62 and find them to be 13.0, 7.5, and 5.5 gallons, respectively, from inner to outer chambers. Just for grins, I checked the 42 and found them to be the same as the 62. So pretty close to the distribution of the DA40, but not quite identical.

Make of this what you will.
These numbers can’t be right Rich. I went to the factory and all three “looked’ identical. That’s not very scientific I know but they are definitely not ranging from 13 to 5.5

I will ask some questions when I am back at the factory (hopefully in a few months) to collect my 62

Amid all the speculation, I submitted a simple question to Diamond:

"Can you please tell me the capacity of the individual wing tanks in the DA62? I understand they total 25USG, but what is the capacity of each separate tank that makes up the 25?"

And their response today is:

"We do not release this information as it is proprietary information, apologies the inconvenience.

Kind Regards,

Wow.

Not a very friendly or safety oriented response.

They release proprietary info on wingspan etc.

Maybe the Chinese can float a balloon over London Ontario and find out for us.

What’s the difference if you give up that info. I must be missing something.

They don't need a balloon - Wanfeng Aviation already owns Diamond Aircraft.

I'll be in Wiener Neustadt next week with Ed and Paul, for talks with Diamond about the Diamond Pilots Association type club launch. I will see if I can get the answer to this question, once and for all.
