A very big deal -- FAA Approves G100UL for ALL GA piston spark-ignition aircraft
"In a first for the aviation industry, the FAA has approved supplemental type certificates (STCs) for the use of General Aviation Modifications Inc.’s G100UL 100-octane unleaded avgas in all general aviation piston aircraft."

This was a major surprise, as it looked like the FAA was going to drag this out far into the future.
The remaining issue will be the actual rate of rollout. Lots of factors in play.

This doesn't affect me, but how do they enforce the need for the STC? Honor system?

I believe you get new stickers for the fuel filler ports.

Russ, I don't directly know the answer wrt enforcement. I recently purchased the Swift Fuels UL94 STC and yesterday had it "installed" by my A&P. All "install" means is my A&P filed some papers to the FAA, gave me those papers to put in my a/c logbook, and he put a sticker on each wing by the fuel cap (as Rich noted) that says I can burn UL94 as well as 100LL. I assume the same process will play out for G100UL. Therefore the only likely enforcement is that the person (owner/operator, FBO) who fuels the aircraft must abide by this sticker.

At KSMO, the UL94 pump asks for your tail number and STC number before dispensing fuel. Obviously you can lie and use someone else's, but it's at least one method of driving compliance.

Such great news. Would be amazing if my newly overhauled engine doesn't have to run on leaded fuel for long. Will see how the rollout progresses by November!

Re: A very big deal -- FAA Approves G100UL for ALL GA piston spark-ignition aircraft
Not sure I share the celebration here. Lead is used as an effective and CHEAP additive. The cost of the new blend will be somewhere between $0.55 and $0.90 incremental over todays 100LL once it is fully productionized at todays 100LL volumes. (Per AOPA story yesterday)
Until then we can expect higher. So as the Poms-Poms wave in Washington, just realize we can expect $$$ as new norm even after oil drops in years to come. This $0.90/gal incremental will be tough for those companies hauling supplies. Just another political feel-good tax imo.

Re: A very big deal -- FAA Approves G100UL for ALL GA piston spark-ignition aircraft
I mostly disagree from two perspectives:
First, the bottom end our avgas engines rarely have issues. However, engines which are used on a regular basis still have to have overhauls, largely due to sledge buildup and/or corrosion. The sludge, is comprised primarily of a lead bromide. Removing TEL will eliminate the continued buildup of this gunk. Which means, that corrosion will be the primary and likely the only concern (outside of SB/AD) causing engines to be rebuilt.
Second. We know scientifically that airborne lead, especially the types released from TEL is extremely harmful.
What we do NOT know if is there is a link between the amount now released and the lower GA activity level is if there is an immediate impact, or at what rate nature can absorb TEL without creating a cumulative impact.
Since we do not have actual controlled studies (which would likely be considered inhumane to execute); removing the target of GAs back about TEL is a very good thing.
