As a Puerto Rico-based DA42 owner flying around the world (passing thru Aus/NZ in Jan) - any tips on flying down under? Any must-hit destinations? Should I validate my license so I can get an ASIC?

I would recommend stopping in Wanaka on NZ's South Island, and visiting Twenty24's restoration hangar while you're there. Wanaka is a gateway to the beautiful Southern Alps; there are currently, I believe, four or five (!) Beech Staggerwings in various stages of restoration on the field.

Also, the aviation museum at Omaka (near Blenheim) is fabulous. Designed by Peter Jackson, the displays are outstanding with some terrific aircraft. Agree - Wanaka (airshow is Easter 2024), Queenstown, Te Anau / Manapouri with a scenic around the fiords would be a brilliant flight. Milford Sound is doable, but there are special procedures for arrivals & departures.

I wasn’t aware that you need to validate your licence to get an ASIC. Without one, you’ll be limited to airports without airline services, or will need an escort. (Theoretically, at least - I’ve only had to show mine at three places in 15 years.). They do seem to a huge pain in the backside to get as a foreign pilot just in the country for a brief time.

Keep us posted on your itinerary as it evolves...
