Flight Stream 210 installation in DA42

Post by D-GCOB »

Flight Stream 210 installation in TDI

The FS210 is installed and all specified functions (incl. flight plan transfer) are available. Small investment with a major improvement.
There are only 4 cables that need to be connected (if GDL69 is available two more) - two to aircraft ground and power and two cables to the MFD. The Installation took only about 4 hours since the software is already included as an option in the loader card.
The Flight Stream was only 769$ (new with installation kit) and the harness for the wiring 50$.

Welcome to share my experience with details for the installation.

Software 370.23

Do you use ForeFlight? Or just Garmin Pilot? And have you done the flight transfer to see what it was like?

Do you have a non WAAS G1000 and KAP140 DA42? If so, this could be a very interesting upgrade for me (I have a -NG with that config)!

I only use Garmin Pilot - but from what I have read the Foreflight is also 100% compatible.
I usually use Autorouter (or the Garmin Pilot App which is basically the same source) to create the trip. The autorouter has an export function to Garmin Pilot (also to Foreflight). It also includes the best departure routing taking the current wind into account. The transfer to the G1000 includes everything - departure routes, airways, required heights, etc. and is done within 2 seconds. Usually I insert the flight plan during the warmup - or at least most of the route and after takeoff the rest. I think the transfer saves a lot of time and gives you time to look at the taxi routes and other details more specific. Also during the flight you can change things easily on the iPad and just transfer it as a new flight plan. User defined points on the iPad are transferred as well. I usually fly 90% IFR and for therefore it is a really great improvement.

The only negative thing is that Diamond has not certified it and that a minor change is required for the installation (even though it is described in the user manual from Garmin for the 370.23 software and also the software itself includes the option).

My plane has the GIA63W with the KAP140 - but I believe that the GDU version (the software 370.23 has 15.11) is important. I am not sure which version the FS210 requires for the entire functionality ( I thing I read in a beach forum minimum V12). Even the basic software release for the NG - version 010-00670-10 has GDU 12.05 already so that it should work.
