Jeering siren noise in headsets when COM activated
Looking for a group-think on a problem I am experiencing.
I have a new 2022 DA40-XLT delivered 9/2022, G1000 NXi.
Within a month of flying, I noticed the headsets make a loud jeering noise after power on. I tried to troubleshoot but no success.
- It happens intermittently after the engine starts Luckily, it never happens during flight.
- It comes on when the COM1 or COM2 are active, whether transmitting or receiving.
- Lasts about 5-10 minutes and then goes away by itself.
- I use BOSE A2 with noise-cancelling; tried regular headsets, stopped Bluetooth, pulled out the Flightstream 510... with no difference.
- Tried Pilot, Co-pilot and back connections with no difference.
- Does not stop if I pull the COM1 or COM2 CB's, but goes away when I pull the AUDIO CB.
Local Diamond service center tried to troubleshoot thinking it way be a short the headset connections but that was not the problem. So they are recommending swapping the G1000 audio box. Contacted Diamond in Canada, they never heard of this problem and suggested the GIA (?) maybe the culprit.
HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM BEFORE?
I would appreciate your thoughts.
Here's a link to a short video and windows media voice file...

Electrical Gremlins are the worst .
Check that your headset is set to stereo (not mono).
Another thing to try is to use a stopwatch to verify how many seconds after powerup this occurs and when it goes away. If its consistently the same then it could be one of the Electrical modules coming up online voltage spike or grounding issue. Try doing a DOE on your breakers (one at a time before power-up) to see if you can make the behavior(time) or condition change. The fact that Audio breaker made it go away doesnt mean its that module that is causing the issue.
If no luck on above swap out the audio module.

I can't activate these files - no permission. So I can't tell what you mean by "jeering". I had a problem many years back caused by what I think your SC hypothesized. To wit: shorting across the contacts in one of the headset jacks. I don't recall specifically which jack (I think it was a mike plug) but the culprit was easily identified and I managed to correct it by slightly loosening the external nut and jiggling the jack with a a plug inserted. This was like 19-20 years ago.
Note that there is 28v supplied to the tip of the mike jack.
I'm unclear whether the new XLTs also have the 6-pin LEMO jacks built so I'll ask whether yours does.

Bizarre sound... the first part almost sounds like an old audio-coupled modem. Do you have a GDL69 installed for Sirius XM Weather? If so, I'd try pulling that breaker. If not, it could either be the audio panel itself or something wired up to it incorrectly. Adam's suggestion is a good one to try to narrow down the timing and the device causing the noise.

I was able to listen to it and agree with Chris. Like someone is trying send you a fax (or you're sending one).
This is not the sound that I experienced way back when.
Is your phone or anything else portable paired with or wired to the audio panel?

Thanks all for the thoughts and advice.
I will try pulling CB's one-on-one next time I hear the noise and time it.
My Bose headset and the flighstream 510 were only Bluetooth devices coupled to the G1000. The noise comes on even when both are disconnected.
I do not have GDL69/SiriusXM or 6-pin LEMO.

Before you turn on the master on the next flight, power down all iOS devices. Just out of curiosity. I am sitting at a monitor setup I only use some of the time and the external monitors pick up my iPhone checking email.

Re: Jeering siren noise in headsets when COM activated
Not sure if this is useful info… I purchased a new Bose A20 Bluetooth headset about six months ago and returned then to Amazon because I experienced a very similar ear piercing audio anomaly in my DA42-VI. My last generation Bose Bluetooth A20s purchased back in 2014 have never had the issue.

Kevin's point is a possibility. Do you have another headset you could try?

It was a little hidden in the original post, but it looks like it was already attempted:
