Predictable, but scary. Are legacy G1000's next?

For the 530W/430W there are straightforward replacement options. The G1000 situation in Diamonds can be more intimidating.

That said, there’s an interesting thought process with respect to what replacement for those of us with the 530W/430W stack would look like. To wit: Do I replace the 430W with another NAV/COM/GPS unit? In reality I rarely use the 430’s GPS functionality though in theory it is a good backup. I do use the heck out of the VHF stuff, especially the COM capabilities. So would a reasonable replacement be a super-duper NAV/COM with maybe an enhanced standby frequency stack but minimal (or no) GPS functionality?

This is far from being urgent, though. These boxes have given me little trouble over the years. The 430W has two things I live with: The range zoom thingee, on the rare occasion I use it, needs to be rather forcefully operated. And the screen is a bit washed out, but really this only is discernible in the boot-up splash screen. Both conditions have been this way for years and give no indication of getting worse.

I like having both screens. I usually keep the moving map on the 530W and the traffic bull’s eye set to 2 nm on the 430W. I’ll also look at the flight plan and the weather on the 430W from time to time. It’s also nice to know that if either the HSI or the 530W go out I can do all of the approaches with the 430W. When it comes time replace them I will look at what kind of flying I’m doing. For IFR I will want the same functionality I have now. If I’m flying only VFR I will be ok with one unit, probably even a small screen one, but I think I would want a second COM unit. At least this is the way i’m thinking about them now. I’m not thinking about replacement until my GNS units fail. I’ve flown with the Garmin GTN 650 and the G1000 and they are super nice but for me they wouldn’t have enough additional utility to justify the downtime, hassle and expense of upgrading now. I feel very fortunate to have the WAAS GNS units. Hopefully they won’t both die at the same time.

How about 3 screens? I flew my friend's airplane today, and being the old steam gauge jockey that I am, this was almost sensory overload:
