Canopy won't close, catches on cowling

Post by shoulderdoc »

The rubber on the leading edge of canopy now catches on the engine cowling when the canopy is closed. If the rubber is pushed a little, the canopy can be closed, but then the rubber catches on the cowling making it hard to reopen the canopy.

I have searched the Diamond Aviators forum, searching for a way to adjust the canopy's mounting to the hinges, or the hinges mounting to the airframe. My A&P has not had any luck getting advice from Diamond.

I suspect the canopy may have been stressed by wind, pulling it open towards the front of the aircraft.

Do any of the forum members have suggestions for how the canopy can be shifted just a tiny bit more posteriorly?

I doubt that the canopy's position on the hinges or it's relationship with the cockpit opening has changed. More likely that the rubber gasket has gotten a bit hard or deformed with age (like me), and is now interfering with closure. The early DA40s (mine included) never had an external rubber gasket, and the canopies seal tight. Could you simply remove it entirely, and go without?

After flying today, I snapped a couple of photos to illustrate the configuration of the canopy gap without the exterior seal:

As I mentioned earlier, mine has no air leaks or water intrusion (the few times I've flown in rain).

I would like to move my DA42's canopy forward a bit. There is a paint to paint rub where it meets the fuselage above the pilot seat. Premier said it can't be done.

As for the rubber strip across the front, I think that appeared at the same time as the taller "bubble" canopy.
