Diamond Aircraft announces increase in maximum takeoff mass for DA62 MPP

Post by NDCDA62 »

This is a very interesting development. I understand that the DA62 was built with a lot of safety margins which perhaps explains the possibility of increasing the MTOM to 2360 kg.

I have asked whether this can be applied to the non-MPP version as this is almost equivalent to an additional passenger.

I doubt there is any structural difference between that plane and the regular 62. In the single world the gross weight increase had been increased by a paper exercise to move from utility to normal category (did that in my G36 Bonanza to magically increase UL by about 300 lbs) as well as changes to things like landing gear. With the DA62 G limit already certified at +3.8 G's (which is already normal category in the single world, and utility is +4.4 G's) I don't know how the increase happens apart from Diamond going to the agencies showing the test results during certification and apply for an increase. If this could be extended to the civilian birds that would be great. My DA62 came to me exactly 80 lbs heavier than advertised, so this would help soothe that sting. Unless of course we would have to pay for an STC to be applied. I'd much rather get Phase III released than have a new page in my AFM saying I can carry (legally) a hundred extra pounds....

Considering the normal biological growth of my young payload, full options and a 1732kg basic empty mass, I am very interested by this topic.

I had stumbled across the STC in the list of STCs available on diamond support website a few weeks ago while gathering some manuals and wanted to make a post about it. The actual STC description is nowhere to be found looking further on the website, yet with a little help from your favourite search engine the AFM modification can be found at http://support.diamond-air.at/fileadmin ... 005-r0.pdf . Download it while it lasts!

In short:
  • take-off weight increase only, landing at this weight is abnormal operation but should not require a hard landing check, as long as you "make efforts for a smooth landing flare / soft touchdown". I've heard it's similar on DA42. So the benefit is 'only' the addition 20 USG of fuel compared to what you can haul today, so you get the full benefits of the 60 kg as soon as you plan a flight longer than 1:20.
  • T/O flaps only at take-off, no flaps prohibited (did they just want to reduce flight testing?)
  • new flaps placard with full flaps speed increased to 122kt
  • various new speeds and performance tables for operation above 2300kg
There is also an amendment to the FIKI supplement for operations above 2300kg but I can't find it again. One can also find an amendment to the AMM that contains basically nothing, so it really looks like this MTOM extension is purely a paperwork exercise for the plane that would benefit from it (of course they probably did quite a bit of flight testing...).

I would really love to have Diamond offer this as an official STC for regular DA62s so no one is tempted to exceed 2300kg without being covered and doing it without all the guidance. Considering it would probably not cost them anything serious, I really hope they will eventually do it. It could sweeten the pill of current engine issues...

I'm sure the DA62 will fly just fine with some additional weight above 2300kg MTOM with both engines operating.

But the single engine rate of climb is what usually limits MTOM in light twins, which is typically only about 150-200 fpm (assuming the pilot does everything right after loss of an engine). Climb rate depends on the availability of "excess" power beyond what's required in level flight, so it's not linear with aircraft weight. 2360kg/5202lbs is a lot of weight for only a single 180hp engine.

STC005 makes no reference to DA62 MPP. In fact, it refers to DA62 in the General Section.

1. GENERAL
The Maximum Take-Off Mass MTOM of the DA 62 increased to 2360 kg
(5203 lb). This Supplement provides necessary information for operating the
airplane above 2300 kg (5071 lb).

http://support.diamond-air.at/fileadmin ... 005-r0.pdf

While the STC005 is still available from Diamond's support site as of the writing of this post on 05-15-2025, it remains unpublished on DA62 SUPPLEMENTS page on the website.
http://support.diamond-air.at/da62_afm_ ... 73ab0.html

However, STC005 is listed among available STC DEO on the list of available supplements for DA62
http://support.diamond-air.at/fileadmin ... -04-28.pdf

Please note that Single Engine Blue line is 95 kts.
