I've long believed that as Diamond started to produce the NG, with its higher max landing weight and max zero fuel weight, that the Lycoming version acquired some of the necessary beefier structure to support it. This is due to the logical inference that parts commonality would be adopted. Depending on exactly when the relevant components were made, that started to happen right around that time frame. From the N number I’m guessing this one was used for initial training at the Air Force Academy. Maybe they ordered them without autopilots?
