I dunno. He was a great instructor and had tons of DA42 time through a local flight school. The school's aircraft didn't have ESP, and I honestly hadn't realized that my new-to-me DA42NG had it, so I didn't even think about it ahead of time.

I forgot to turn off ESP when taking a multi-ATP checkride in our DA62 in September -- being asked to demonstrate steep turns while under the hood (i.e., wearing foggles).

After feeling the stick push back, I immediately aborted the maneuver, explained to the examiner about ESP -- and he was nice enough to let me complete the maneuver with ESP turned off. :)

Yes! My first ME lesson was a struggle with me trying to do steep turns and stalls while fighting the ESP. My MEI didn't have any prior esperience with ESP so we were both scratching our heads until we figured this out. After that things went much more smoothly. 8-)

Scott makes several references to "fighting it", overpowering the ESP. I had the same issue when training for my ME in a DA62 and practicing steep turns. I subsequently learned that holding down the disengage button, or CWS button, on the stick would disable ESP and I could practice my turns without fighting the ESP.

Here is a video from one of my favourite YouTuber’s demonstrating how the ESP works with the GFC500 autopilot.

While it is not 100% applicable to the Diamond/Garnin 1000 aircraft (no auto level button yet), it does provide a great overview of the envelope protection.

Scott Perdue’s aircraft is an aerobatic Bonanza so don’t try this stuff at home.
