Re: DA50 vs The World

I am wondering about the endurance. Why do they have that massive wing and only 49 gallons? The DA50 shares the same outer wings and fuel tanks as the DA40, DA42, and DA62. Each wing contains up to 25 gal (19 gal in the DA40NG) aluminum fuel tanks located between twin carbon fiber wing spars. These...

Re: Diamond China announce its own 'independently designed' domestic aircraft diesel engine, the 'AEC2.0L'

A Chinese made knock off of an Austro diesel. Sign me up. How about an Austrian made knock off of a German Mercedes diesel? (i.e., the core of Austro AE300/AE330 engines, ever since Austro used up its supply of Mercedes OM640 engines) The quality of these engines might not be much different, especi...

Re: Diamond China announce its own 'independently designed' domestic aircraft diesel engine, the 'AEC2.0L'

The engine will replace Austro Engine's current model on light aircraft DA40 and Da42 made by Austria's Diamond Aircraft and its Chinese partner, CETC Wuhu Diamond Aircraft , said Jin Gebo, Chery's assistant general manager. The main parts will be produced in Chery's factories in Wuhu, Anhui provin...

Re: DA50 vs The World

For anyone that has ordered or is flying a DA50, I'm wondering why you selected the aircraft? What were the elements of the plane or the company that factored most in your decision? 1. I wanted to buy a DA62 but my wife wanted a single That's unfortunate. If you can afford $1M+ for a new DA50, a DA...

Re: New member introduction & takeaways

FYI quick thread update - have still not had any DA40 time despite my best efforts…local rental N712PA XLS either down for maintenance or cannot make the few checkout windows work. If you're still looking for a local ride in a Lycoming DA40, N970DS is back in action at KJYO with flight school Aviat...

Re: I-70 Across Continental Divide

The best E-W routes to get across the Rockies in a normally-aspirated piston plane are I-80 thru Wyoming, I-40 near Albuquerque, or I-10 near El Paso. But you've already flown all 3 of these. While I've flown the "I-70 route" over Colorado, it was in a turbocharged DA42 IFR up at 16,000/17...

Re: Diamond China announce its own 'independently designed' domestic aircraft diesel engine, the 'AEC2.0L'

Great research: this announcement certainly raises lots of questions. AEC2.0L engine: AEC = Austro Engine China? CA42 aircraft: DA42 produced in China? It would make sense for a first flight of a new engine to take place in a twin-engined aircraft rather than a single. The engine in the picture look...

Re: MSB-E4-042 - Crankshaft-bearing cap screws replacement

How is it the Mercedes version of this engine didn't have all these problems? Mercedes built hundreds of these engines per DAY in automated factories, whereas Austro hand-builds only a couple hundred engines per YEAR. I'm by no means a manufacturing expert, but it's obvious to me that Mercedes was ...

Re: Accelerated IFR training in DA40 - recommendations?

Amazingly, insurance is only requiring 70 hours (!) with the mentor aboard, though they are charging $70k for the insurance (also exclamation point!). IIRC legal requirement for TBM is 24 flight hours with mentor on board. In the US, the FAA doesn't require a Type Rating for a TBM (or Epic) single-...

Re: Rear Door departs a DA40 after takeoff

I'm guessing there have been more than a dozen DA40 doors opening and departing the aircraft in flight, including during takeoff when detached doors have been recovered on the runway. Years ago, I had an occasion when the rear door of my 2008 DA40 XLS unexpectedly came open in cruise flight, and was...
