Re: engine overhaul

I think you are referring to an IO-360M1A rather than M1B. I’ve had a factory rebuild and a factory overhaul on my 40’s. If you have an original core, Lycoming offers the zero-time factory rebuild for the same cost as a factory overhaul. A benefit of the rebuild is a 2 year warranty instead of a 1 y...

Re: Approved flight simulators

It has to be at least an aviation training device, which is defined in 61.1 as a training device which is approved by the (FAA) Administrator. So, not Microsoft flight simulator or X plane running on your home computer, but I think there are some devices in the $5-10k range. I think Redbird makes on...

Re: new, refurbished DA40 woes

When buying a DA40, I think the best strategy is to buy an average airframe with complete logbooks and no significant damage history. Have a Diamond Authorized Service Center do a pre-buy inspection (not the same shop that the seller or dealer uses). Then do the refurb work after you own the plane. ...

Re: Twin or Single

Keep in mind there aren’t many DA40NG’s currently on the FAA registry (something like 20 last time I looked). On the other hand, there have been over 700 Lycoming DA40’s flying around the U.S. for a long time - all but a few more than 10 years old. While there may be 1 or 2 Lycoming DA40 engine fail...

Re: Leaseback experiences?

Working through financials of the whole thing - opps to write-off a bunch it seems to offset other gains i have If tax deductions are important to you, make sure you engage an aviation tax specialist, either a lawyer or CPA. There are a handful of experienced tax people out there who limit their pr...

Re: New DA40 XLT unavailable

I had the same experience a little more than a year ago. I was hoping things would change with new ownership. In my opinion, Diamond has not been very transparent about their future intentions with the Lycoming DA40.

Re: DA40NG

As far as operating cost, there is no doubt that the fuel cost of the NG will be less, but I'm not sure the lifecycle cost of the Austro engine would put the 40NG in the pro column for operating costs. There are a number of expensive inspections and component replacements, I believe at 300 or 600 h...

Re: DA40NG

As the OP, this turned into a much more lively discussion than I expected! And you are all to be applauded for the civility in the face of significantly different opinions, something sometimes lacking in other discussion forums. What is missing is comments from owners of the DA40NG. Maybe the lack ...

Re: DA40NG

Well I can only speak to the TAE/Centurion/CD engine. We have logged well over 200,000 engine hours on a mix of 1.7 and 2.0 engines and we have had 3 failures which seems pretty close to the figure quoted by Colin and far exceeds the FAA quoted failure rate of 1 per 10,000 hrs for Avgas engines I d...
