Re: New fuel pump requires Prist below +5C

The pragmatic answer is that this should be no big issue, perhaps a few cents more per gallon in the FBOs that offer both options. In much of the US, and especially at smaller airports, PRIST is premixed with Jet-A. Prist (fuel system icing inhibitor) prevents any water suspended in the fuel from fr...

Re: Insurance vs. age

What is the sweet spot for flying hours versus premiums? ... Is there a number of hours where the rate goes up because the hours are so high? I don't think there is an insurance premium downside to flying "too many" hours per year -- provided you are flying within the terms of your policy...

Re: DA-42 in-flight engine failure

If you want to become familiar with the previous issue, see Austro Engine MSB-E4-034, MSB-E4-035, and MSB-E4-036. You can find Austro Engine documentation here: https://partners.diamondaircraft.com/s/files It's important to let Austro complete their engineering diagnosis to determine what caused the...

Re: DA-42 in-flight engine failure

If I remember correctly, the earlier situation was related to a manufacturing specification/tolerance issue with the drive gear at the end of the intake camshaft (shown in an earlier post), not with or within the HPP itself. It's also possible that there could be an issue with the spur gear attached...

Re: DA-42 in-flight engine failure

It could also be fuel contamination and they will test the fuel. It was always refueled at major local airports. That's certainly part of a complete diagnosis, and hopefully they sampled fuel from both sides to see if there was any difference. Presumably, you fueled both at the same time from the s...

Re: DA-42 in-flight engine failure

Thanks for the report, and I'm glad it was a safe outcome. Looking forward to updates about the nature of the failure in the HP fuel pump system, e.g., if it was a failure in the Bosch HPP itself, in the mechanisms inside the Austro engine that drive it, elsewhere in the high pressure fuel rail or i...

Re: No plans for Diamond GFC 500 autopilot?

Possibly. Assuming the number of servos is the same, and the airframe composite bracket mounting locations didn't change between the DA40 KAP140 and GFC700 installations, the installation (in a steam gaugeDA40) seems straightforward. An A&P with autopilot repair experience in KAP140 and GFC700 D...

Re: Quick Tip: Pop-up IFR Clearance

but even SoCal in the LA Basin is good about pop-up clearances... especially if they're already on file. Wayne, do you consider a "pop-up clearance" the same as "picking up a [filed] clearance in the air" the same thing? I've considered these two different things. When I depart ...

Re: No plans for Diamond GFC 500 autopilot?

KAP140 servos cannot be used because the Garmin servos are specific to the GFC700 or GFC500 (and each uses different servos). The Garmin servos also require a different mounting bracket than the KAP140 servos (and updated rigging). The bottleneck issue is that the KAP140 does not have a yaw servo (Y...

Re: Delivery Delayed by 1 year

At least some of the composite tooling is shared among the DA62, the DA62-MPP, and the DA50 in Austria.
