Re: FAA-Approved Sim for Instrument Currency?

Nearly 100 folks have looked at this, but no replies. No one has any experience with affordable FAA-approved simulators?

FAA-Approved Sim for Instrument Currency?

The FAA recently published a final rule that will allow, when it becomes effective, instrument currency approaches to be logged using an approved simulator (being at least an "approved aviation training device" or "ATD") without an instructor being present. Bruceair.com has a goo...

Re: uAvionix ADS-B out solution

I hadn't realized that this product doesn't include a strobe light, or the rear-facing white position light, and so wouldn't in its current form be able to replace the strobe/position light housing on a DA40. Maybe they will offer different versions.

uAvionix ADS-B out solution

Did any of you who went to Oshkosh see this: https://www.uavionix.com/news/uavionix-reveals-skybeacon-the-first-near-zero-install-ads-b-out-solution/ Seems like a really clever, almost zero-installation solution for someone who doesn't need integrated ASD-B "in" (and from reading some of t...

Re: Upgrade?

Chris: My point on LPV approaches -- which I didn't explain very well -- is that at some fields, there is a LPV on the other side of the runway with the ILS. So if the ILS would force you to land with an unacceptable tailwind, and the ceilings are too low to circle, you could fly the LPV from the op...

Re: Upgrade?

Thanks, Rich and Chris, for these helpful (and prompt!) responses. I think we all probably look at these issues in a similar fashion. Besides being fun and economical to fly, the DA40 is (relatively) very safe. That being said, who wouldn't want a chute, if it were available without useful load, car...

Upgrade?

I am wondering whether to upgrade from my 2005 non-WAAS DA40. My engine is around 1600 TT, and so it might be a logical time to look at selling it. The DA40 fits my mission (nearly all trips within 200 nm, occasional light IFR, very seldom more than 2 pax) well. What I might trade up for would be: W...

Re: Cleaning the G1000 Display

I use these: http://iclothavionics.com/general-aviation/ They claim to use a proprietary fluid that is approx. 75% purified water and 25% isopropyl alcohol, and some trace amount of another "secret" ingredient. Anyway, I haven't noticed any damage to the coatings. Also, the cloth they use ...

Here you go:

There's also an Avweb article here:

This seems to indicate that you're going to need at least a Mini 2.

Foreflight and Gen 1 iPads

Foreflight has announced that its app will "cease to function" on first-generation iPads, starting in early January 2017. Which leaves me with a dilemma. I have a first generation iPad mini (and yes, I have been thinking of upgrading, as Foreflight and other updated apps are running awfull...
