Security certificate expired, but NOT UNSAFE

Post by Kai »

Hello,

our security certificate expired yesterday and interestingly the provider of the certificate Godaddy this time did not spam me weeks in advance to renew it. So I missed it. It needs to be installed from scratch and will be done within the next 24 hours. This time I will renew for three years, so it won´t happen again.

Other than it says for Chrome users, it is not unsafe to access. If you can read this, you might already know.

My apologies for causing the confusion.

no problem. I didn't think it was unsafe, just annoying having to click through the warnings.
Thanks,
Steve

The new security certificate is installed now. Interestingly, godaddy charged me $65 for a year and with another provider it was now only €20 for the three years. It is always worth comparing prices.

I don't know about the EU but the domain service pricing model in the US is to offer very low initial rates followed by much higher rates once change is difficult. Not inspiring! There are a few vendors who have more transparent pricing models, and show more respect for (and service to) customers. Understandably, they are not among the lowest price vendors.

Robert,

while I am not really happy with godaddy, they seemed to work fine for me. Their spamming was always a bit annoying. On the other hand, they used to offer a consolidation of renewals, so I had to do it only once a year at the same day. At the renewal date, I would google for all kinds of coupons and given the fact that my renewals each year cost about $500, I received further discounts for bulk renewal. So it was not all too expensive.

Also, it is easy to get a hold of them as they have a 24-hour-helpdesk. So until now I could not complain too much about them.

Nevertheless, if you have a better provider who also offers privacy protection, please, let me know. Will gladly change. I am not scared of the hassles involved when transferring domains.

Former GoDaddy customer. I endorse namecheap ... We transferred all of our domain registrations over there 3 years ago.

I've been using Gandi for the last decade (French company), though their pricing has gotten a bit more expensive over the years since they expanded and added an office in San Francisco. (15USD / year or so and they include a SSL certificate...)

Good question.

Right now, we have a few servers on GoDaddy, more on Dotster, and three on SquareSpace. I like SquareSpace the best in terms of innovation, infrastructure, and responsive customer service. However, it is a proprietary CMS. I don't think they would host phpBB. Lately, friends have been recommending SiteGround for price and service.

I think if we compared notes every 12 months, the list would be different each time.
