Cylinder head temps

Post by perossichi »

I have a DA40-180 2002. I have been learning about proper engine monitoring.

Cyl#1 runs consistently hotter than others. At WOT, 2300 rpm and 100 ROP cruise, CHT #1 = 400-415, 25-50 LOP CHT#1 = 385-395.

I’ve

1. Run GAMI spread test and my GAMI spread is less than .4 gph

2. Inspected baffle seals and replaced right front baffle to no effect.

3. Swapped #1 and #3 CHT probes and still have the problem.

4. Checked and synchronized timing in both mags.

The only thing left is the #1 baffle. Is there a design problem or was it manufactured Improperly to restrict airflow? The inter cylinder baffle is in place.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

You are 4 serial numbers behind mine. As delivered in 2002 we had this same problem. Battled it all the way returning from picking it up from the factory in May 2002 and thereafter. Had to run high fuel flows to keep this one cylinder under control, and the other cylinders were running much cooler than necessary because of it.

The problem was resolved that summer with the installation of the redesigned right air intake and baffle section. This is, of course, right in front of #1. It's known as the "Arizona" baffle and became standard equipment sometime thereafter. If you don't have it, you need it. If you do have it, then it's on to more troubleshooting.

This has been discussed several times on the forum, including how to tell if you have this modification.

Hi Rich,

I’m VERY interested by this topic because I have the same issue (40.026 from feb 2001).

I’m about to order a complete baffle and seal kit (4.000 € approx) to try this issue!
Please give me in detail the baffle that I need to order (Arizona?) is it only one of the 4 baffles? Will this fit to the other 3 baffles that I have.

Many thanks!

Arnaud.

It just replaces the right front piece of composite baffling and the seal between the front of the cowling on the right side. The air intake of the front of the fairing also needs to be opened up a bit wider. Somewhere here on the forum we dug up the part number. I'll search around and see if I can find that post.

Thanks you very much.

Do you think that my plane already has it installed. Can I visually identify which version I have ?

Here is a thread showing the discussion and part number (though it's hard to read). You probably do not have this part unless it was subsequently installed. Diamond thought it unnecessary unless one lived in a hot climate - like Arizona. And I stand corrected, this mod was done on our plane almost a year after delivery.

In the IPC, I have found the following ref for my plane:
D41-7166-11-00
In the thread it’s the same ref with /02, is it the modified part (Arizona)?

I guess that approx 103 is the size of the hole with the Arizona kit?
Is it in mm?

Yes, 103 mm. That's a pretty good way to tell.

One additional question:

My egt is also higher on cylinder 1. Is it related to Arizona/ non Arizona baffle?
