This is just an update on this source for metric stainless screws and washers handy at annual and sometimes in-between.

http://www.mrmetric.com (common DA40 numbers: M11522,M11512, M11514, M11524, M11541, M61001, M61003, M61002)

I placed an order with these guys. A couple of the bags came up a few short. I let them know thinking they would slip the missing screws into an envelope. Instead, the shortages were replaced the next day by UPS Red! That is above and beyond service and increasingly rare. Good guys.

I also have an A&P friend who had no Diamond experience. With all the resources out there from Diamond (AMM, IPC, SBs etc) we had little trouble building our expertise to do an owner-assisted annual. My recommendation is to build a spreadsheet to guide you through the annual. Unfortunately I'm a DA-20 owner so you can't use my spreadsheet verbatim for your DA-40 but the spreadsheets and columns can be universal. Also, I posted an example of my spreadsheet before -I'll post it again, now Version 2.

From my previous post, there are three new spreadsheets in this Excel Workbook. The new spreadsheets set up to conduct three engine tests pre-annual to help diagnose any engine issues before you pull the cowling. Unfortunately, I cannot remember or find the article that allowed me to build these spreadsheets - I'll continue to look, but the article was written by Mike Busch who is arguably the best-known A&P/IA in general aviation.

Robert... I just lost one side screw on my nosewheel fairing. I'm a 2008 DA40 XLS. Can you link me to the "M" number above that would be that fastener?

Thanks,
Wayne

Hi Wayne. Are you referring to the one that threads into the axle spindle? I have lost a couple of these too over the years. Not sure why; the only ones I have lost.

I'm traveling right now and I don't recall which number but if you go to the Mr. Metric website http://www.mrmetric.com you will see very clear pictures and specifications. I think you will figure which one it is. If not, I'll check when I get back and let you know if someone else doesn't jump in before then.

The screws on the side of the nosegear fairing need to be loctited (the blue stuff) into place or they become stainless steel rain :)

All the screws that hold the nose faring halves together, and also attach it to the nose gear fork, are MrMetric part number M11522 (ISO7380-M5x12-A2).

That explains it. My originals were not treated so I was reluctant to do it.

This was actually recommended to me by Diamond Support. I don't know if it has found its way into the maintenance manual. Before I did this routinely, mine were constantly coming loose. No more.

Great idea to use the Loctite. As part of every preflight, I used to have to check the tightness of every screw on my DA40's nose gear fairing because the screws kept falling out.
