Re: Removing G1000 from a Da40?
As the pics show on my panel I have two aspens and a G5. I would not have had to have a backup like the G5 but I installed the aspens a few years ago and had the older software in the aspens. With the new pro max upgrade the FAA has ruled that the aspen 2000 and 2500 systems do not need a backup. This saves money and space.

Does Roll-steering work between the Aspen's and the KAP140? Seems the Aspens should be able to drive the KAP140 around a procedure turn etc. Or does Roll-steering need to be something that is built into the A/P?Pilot55 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2019 10:42 am Here is my panel. I have never had a issue with aspens. the aspens are new pro max with SV and geo referenced charts. each aspen has its own ahars as well as the G5. I am replacing the audio panel and the 530 with GTN 750 and remote audio. If I could only replace the KAP 140 with garmin 500.
I have as I said earlier GDL 88 adsb in and out with GPSS on the aspens.

G1000 installation - STC. It's hard to read the pic, here it is in B&W.
I've not yet looked up that STC to verify that it is in fact the G1000.
It says... "GARMIN INTEGRATED AVIONICS SYSTEM INSTALLED AS PER STC No. SAO1254WI AMEND.1"I've not yet looked up that STC to verify that it is in fact the G1000.

It is.
Let us know what the cost is to remove it and install a whole new replacement system. Anyone want to start a betting pool?

Re: Removing G1000 from a Da40?
I'll leave that to Antoine to do.
As tempting as all this is I'll probably just settle for a gdl82 adsb and call it good.
Though if I were to do it I know mostly what to do. I once assisted in a complete re-panel of a Caravan. Big Job & lots of wires. Basically on the Diamond it would be rip out all wires that are avionics, door switches, engine monitor then start anew from scratch. The biggest cost is installation time. Ok, maybe second biggest cost.

Yes the aspen has gpss and does a great job. The kap just has a hard time on the glide slope on a rnav. On a ILS it works just fine. I use the kap140 in heading mode and aspen with gpss on until I am on the IAF and turned on the approach. Then I switch to approach on the kap140.

Interesting. With the KCS 55A/KAP140 I have no problems with GS on ILS, LPV, LP approaches.Pilot55 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2019 12:21 am Yes the aspen has gpss and does a great job. Re: Removing G1000 from a Da40?
The G1000 has a surprisingly small scrap value. When I was running the numbers with my adjuster to evaluate total vs repair, he communicated that most owners are surprised by this. He stated that it’s a combination of good product support (da40 software issues aside) and of good quality. The avidyne avionics, in contrast, are much more valuable on the resale market.

Re: Removing G1000 from a Da40?
No need. Been there, done that on a much more complex aircraft. If you have an avionics shop do it in Europe it will be around 70 K AMU less resale of the G1000. (btw - how practical is it to re-install a G1000 in an experimental with an Io-360 engine?)pietromarx wrote: ↑Sun Jun 23, 2019 7:59 pm

As Brock said, one needs to remove all of the avionics cabling and start anew. It is a lot of work but not outrageously so given good preparation.
I would do it owner-assisted, as I think it is a very interesting job.
Let me now propose another guessing round:
How much weight would it save to remove the infamous avionics rack, and what would the effect be?
Let us for the sake of the exercise assume that the panel mounted stuff is same weight as the G1000.
I'd love to see an updated weight and balance estimate.
My guts say it is minus 20 lbs in the extended luggage compartment AND 5 lbs of wiring AND probably 17 lbs of ballast?
Anyone interested in 40 lbs of useful load and no more rear seat loading issues?

Re: Removing G1000 from a Da40?
So Matt, what I hear you saying is if we want to increase the value of our DA40s we should scrap the G1000 and install Avidyne.theRDWRER wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2019 11:00 am The G1000 has a surprisingly small scrap value.
