DA40 WAAS Upgrade Demand
This is a request for feedback from 2004-2007 (non-WAAS) Lycoming DA40 G1000 owners only:
Why have you NOT signed up for Diamond's WAAS upgrade program?
We (DAN owners reps) and Diamond would like to know so that we can better understand the desire (or lack of interest) by DA40 owners to replace their G1000 GIA63s with GIA63W units.
Representative answers might include:
- I have signed up with Diamond but haven't yet sent in a deposit because...
- I haven't decided yet because...
- I am not planning to sign up because...
- I didn't know about the WAAS upgrade program until now.
- I'm not sure how to sign up.
- I already signed up and sent in a deposit.
- Other...
- What's WAAS?
(This isn't a multiple-choice poll, so please answer essay-style.)
In your response, please include your DA40 serial number (i.e., 40.XXX) and tail number.
Thanks!

Re: DA40 WAAS Upgrade Demand
Is 'already upgraded' a needed response or will you pull this information from the excel tracking from a couple of years ago?

You've nicely answered the question with this response. Thanks.Diamond_Dan wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 10:21 pm Is 'already upgraded' a needed response or will you pull this information from the excel tracking from a couple of years ago?

Re: DA40 WAAS Upgrade Demand
Perhaps an additional element is this: was expecting to upgrade to NXi (or, if you are glass-half-empty, why upgrade to another level of unsupported product)?
I did upgrade a 2004 to WAAS when the GIA63Ws came out.
Today I would not due to the above.

Re: DA40 WAAS Upgrade Demand
I upgraded in January for my 2004 DA40-180 serial 40.400. Worth every penny at that price and will get more than that at resale I'm sure. It to me would be the biggest detractor in resale value NOT to have WAAS. If the promised October SW release comes out (GDU ver 15.0) at next predicted date of May 2022 (I believe that was next prediction) then it will be even more of a great investment.

Re: DA40 WAAS Upgrade Demand
I had emailed Diamond with a couple of questions, but got no response. Even the crickets were silent. Multiple tries ...

Re: DA40 WAAS Upgrade Demand
I would call them and ask to speak to Will Hawkes. He is very good and knowledgeable about all of this. He was very helpful and supportive throughout my upgrade.Johnrschaefer wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 2:34 am I had emailed Diamond with a couple of questions, but got no response. Re: DA40 WAAS Upgrade Demand
I contacted Diamond back in April about the WAAS upgrade program and was told that they were no longer taking deposits as they had run out of GIA63Ws. I was told I'd be placed on a waitlist. Come July there had been no change in availability. Fortunately I was able to find a pair of used GIA63Ws on my own and had them installed at SouthTec. I'm very happy to have done the upgrade.

Re: DA40 WAAS Upgrade Demand
I’m a VFR pilot in a place where IFR conditions mean either thunderstorms or ice. I don’t NEED to fly in that kind of weather. Just not terribly important to me. And partly because of all that, I have not kept up with all the info pertaining to upgrades. But it seems complicated, costly, and time consuming. Not to mention (I may be wrong) but it seems like the whole thing is dependent on the availability of somebody else’s used components?
I did manage to get synthetic vision added. Seems adequate for my needs. I may even age out of flying in the next several years. I feel when the time comes, there will still be a reasonable market for my 2005 DA40 as is. There are plenty of folks looking for 4 seat airplanes for training and or fun flying.
