Squat switch functions

Post by cttime »

Reading the AMM one sees that the LH squat switch overrides the gear position to protect against inadvertent gear retraction. The RH switch turns off the Stall heat on the ground.

What else do these switches do and do either affect the In-Air timer?

I understand that the RH squat switch is used for the stall warning heating, the engine pre-glow, the ECU test and the TAS voice warning. Not sure about the In-air timer. It would make sense that one of them is wired for that but I'm not sure.

Left Main Squat Switch
1. Prevents gear retraction on the ground

Right Main Squat Switch
1. Stall warning lift indicator - heating power is turned off when on the ground
2. Engine Glow plug active when on ground only
3. ECU test can only be activated when on the ground only
4. TAS (Traffic Alerting System) voice warning disabled on ground - to stop annoying alerts from other aircraft on the airport

The G1000 flight timer can be set to either Pwr-On or In-Air. The in-air detection, if I recall correctly, is when the GPS registers a ground speed greater than 30 knots.

Doesn't turn the power off to the stall warner but does reduce the current. It should still get warm when you check it on your preflight. If it is getting hot, replace the squat switch or the heater circuit will burn out and they are damn expensive to replace.
