G1000 Service Needed / GDU 1040

Post by AirbusAddict »

Hello everyone,

I received a G1000 "PFD1 service needed - return unit for repair" alert. Has anyone else received this alert before? My system is functioning perfectly aside of the alert. Garmin dealers I have spoke with say may need to exchange unit.

Any know the going rate of a GDU 1040 "Garmin exchange"? I have heard anywhere from $1900-$3200.

The “refurbished “ cost of the GDU 1040 from Garmin is approximately $2800 to 2900 plus labor/reprogramming.
The usual recommendation with a service warning is that it be evaluated or inspected which is usually a return.

I had this alert once and it disappeared after I waited for a few days. Has not appeared ever since then. Keep fingers crossed...

I’m curious if anyone has seen this come up after setting up a tablet mount on the pilot side. Looking at the troubleshooting manual it looks like it may be related to the light sensors. We’ve seen this sporadically and it seems it may (?) be related to the tablet partially obscuring one of the photocells resulting in very different readings for each sensor. Looking in config mode, all 4 (2 in each display) sensors are working and responsive to light.

I have not had this issue before but have my iPad further away and closer to me by having it mounted to the canopy to the left with a RAM mount suction cup. Have you tried that if you think that the error is caused by the photocells being partially obscured?

On a completely different note, I just realised that I have flown N20HJ before! :)

For starters, turn off the instrument lighting which is on in this photo and I think interacts with the panel brightness.

Have just begun the troubleshooting. We liked the idea of having it as close in as possible to the instrument scan, but wanted to see if anyone else has seen this or correlated this alert to mounting a tablet up close.

Nice! She has a new home now in the Pacific North West So far doing our best to take care of her.

Noted - Though this picture was taken immediately after mounting, and the instrument lighting was indeed off when the intermittent CAS alert showed up.
