IFR/VFR Truckee as Caravan with Levi (Part 1)
IFR or IFF?... given a choice, I Fly Freeways. Good friend Levi is helping me shuttle our aircraft to Truckee CA for her annual inspection. A little IMC on climbout and then VFR to intercept Interstate 80 for a crossing of the northern Sierra Nevada. What are your strategies for crossing mountain ranges?

As early in the morning as I can possibly do it. Lots of planned diversions, which have happened on occasion.

Colin, exactly! When I was based in Truckee and Carson City, and traveling out of the area... my rule was to be back home, landed, in the hangar by 1pm.
Thanks!

Agreed. And here's a picture from a few days ago that helps clarify that reasoning. Yesterday was full thunderstorms over the area from 2-6 with lots of lightning and hail.

Russ, cool photo... to observe from the ground! -- having long since heeded the "in the mountains (or desert Southwest, or Florida, or whatever) get down by early afternoon" mantra.
Thanks,
