To Denali, VFR On Top

Post by photoSteveZ »

We tired of waiting for the weather to improve, so on our last full day in Alaska we ventured out from Palmer with the intent of getting on top of the overcast and circumnavigating Denali. We had to head the wrong direction for half an hour to work our way on top, but the scenery along the way was worth it.

Denali is a BIG mountain.

Here’s a 4K video of the flight, captured with a wing mounted GoPro MAX 360 and the amazing new Nikon Z8.

Steve, thanks for sharing the stunning video! I enjoyed watching it.
I'm curious how you mounted the 360 camera. What kind of attachment did you use?

Thanks, I enjoyed making it.

I use the NFlightCam exterior ball mount. You bolt a machined spud to the airframe using one of the nut plates that attach the stab tip to the horizontal stabilizer; the ball mount fits over the spud and is clamped in position with a pair of hex-head bolts. Small, tidy and very secure.
