Re: DA40-180 Oil Dipstick: Lycoming MSB 612
Must say I have not been on this forum for awhile. Thanks for the heads up as I knew nothing about this Service Bulletin. I never let the oil get below 6 quarts on existing dipstick so I believe no damage has been done to engine. With that said, I will be ordering a new one.

Re: DA40-180 Oil Dipstick: Lycoming MSB 612
Mine showed up a couple of days ago in a box the size of coffee table! It was accompanied with a great swag of documents including an "Authorized Release Certificate" from the FAA. Does anyone know what I need to put into the engine log documentation-wise? I feel silly going to a mechanic for help with a dipstick.

Re: DA40-180 Oil Dipstick: Lycoming MSB 612
This is what my entry in the engine log looks like:
"Lycoming MSB 612 accomplished. Oil level gage P/N LW-16783-18 replaced with P/N LW-14760 and new oil level gage seal P/N 74068. Engine run, no leaks."
I keep every piece of paper that comes with any part in a separate loose leaf binder that Diamond furnished when I bought the airplane.

Re: DA40-180 Oil Dipstick: Lycoming MSB 612
Just thought I'd address the issue about what the dipstick really measures. Is it the total oil in the engine (with some built-in guess about oil that may or may not be in the oil filter) or the quantity in the sump. Having put the new dipstick in several months ago (with now presumably accurate readings) I assert it's the amount in the sump only. Here's the test:
Oil/filter change as part of annual Monday. Put in 8 qts. Philips XC. Let it settle while inspections are completed, fairings and stuff buttoned up, etc. Check dipstick: shows 8 qts. Start plane and taxi back to hangar,
Tuesday go out to hangar, check oil level. Shows about 7-3/4-ish qts. Add in 14 oz. of Camguard. Let it settle in while I sweep out hangar and put stuff back in plane. Check oil level. Shows 8 qts.

Re: DA40-180 Oil Dipstick: Lycoming MSB 612
I just wanted to thank the forum for posting this item. I had noticed some strange inconsistencies with my oil levels on the DA40 I bought back in May - putting in two quarts only brought the indicated level up from about 5 to just over 6, with the first quarter having much less of a measurable impact than the second. Sure enough, I have the old dipstick. It's annoying that the previous owner didn't take advantage of the warranty period to get this replaced for free, but at least I know why the indications on the defective dipstick have been inconsistent.

As a temporary fix, you might etch the correct lines in your current dipstick based on the data Rich and Dave have provided. It might be a tad less than perfect but better than you have now, and close enough.danno2000 wrote:Sure enough, I have the old dipstick. It took several months to get the refund back from Aviall, but it did finally come. Not a big deal. ~$200 didn't exactly ruin my life.

I got mine via Natalie Porter. There was no charge so long as I returned the old dipstick in the required period (30 days, I think).

Hi everyone, first post. I do have to say this forum is a fantastic wealth of info. The wife and I recently purchased a steam gauge 2003 DA40 and we’ve been enjoying it immensely. She’s going for her instrument rating and I’m almost ready for private signoff.
We too had the old dipstick. Took a close up picture and will figure out how to post eventually.
Next battle is the sporadic fuel pressure sensor issue. Looks like we’ll be picking up some Stabilant22 from the other messages in the forum to tackle that issue.
Thanks again for the great community support, it really helps out the next person.
