IO-390 at TBO time
Anybody ever consider putting in a IO-390 at overhaul time.? I’m still several years away from an overhaul but it seems “interesting”. The downside is trying to get a STC like for the supercharger is like pulling teeth with the FAA.

I’d happily sign a wait list for the io-390 STC.

While we're at it, maybe an AEIO-390 so we can do loops and rolls ;-) I would love to sign up for the IO-390 STC if the airframe could handle it. But you would also probably need Garmin/Diamond help with the G1000 which would be very difficult. Did any of the Mooney models with a STC have a G1000?

I would do it if there were an STC but after watching how difficult it was for Forced Aeromotive to get theirs I don't see it happening.

That’s what has me concerned too. I asked diamond if they were looking at this but they aren’t looking at it. I know cirrus upgraded to the 215 hp version in their latest sr20. It’s got about a 100 lbs more useful load and they are claiming 155 Ktas cruising speed. I’m still a ways off from an overhaul so for now it’s probably a thought exercise.

Re: IO-390 at TBO time
It's not as simple as just bolting on the IO-390 when you remove the IO-360. The IO-390 is an angle valve engine, different dimensionally and is a bit heavier than the 360. The 390 seems to run cooler CHT's, but higher oil temps - so a possible oil cooler redesign would be required (along with a different cowling most likely).
That being said, a DA40 with the gross weight of the NG and powered by an IO-390 would be a great airplane. I said that to Christian Dries years ago at the Katana Kafe in Austria and was completely rebuffed.

Diamond can't get the software certified for their *current* models, I can't imagine them taking on an engine swap for one of them.

Re: IO-390 at TBO time
Diamond also can’t get us a digital replacement for the KAP-140 autopilot, even for the planes with conventional instrumentation. I don’t think Diamond understands American GA. Many pilots want to upgrade their planes.
