Austro support in Salina Kansas?

Post by spr »

I was taking off from Salina Kansas on the third leg of a trip from Savannah, Ga, to Loveland, Colorado, when I get an ECU B fail annunciation on the take off roll. I aborted the take off, then cleared the annunciation by switching to ecu b. I ran it up twice without any more error messages, so I tried again to take off. This time ECU A fail annunciation came on, so I aborted the take off again.
Does anyone know of a Diamond service shop in Kansas? And yes, I need , but don’t have a dongle to read any error message.

Been there, done that, sorry to hear about your situation on the road. It is frustrating enough having a breakdown, but even more frustrating when you don't know what the problem is.

It looks like the nearest Diamond service center to you is Clemens Aviation in Wichita: https://www.clemensaviation.com/maintenance-shop/. Looks like that's a ~1.5h drive from Salina. Maybe you could drive down tomorrow to borrow a dongle?

Thanks Russ, and David. I’ll contact Clemens aviation and see if they can help, then try Diamond support if this doesn’t work.

Flight aware shows it made the hop to KRUQ so I assume it is with SouthTec.

I got a hold of Glen at Southtec. He thought it was an issue with overboost, and thought it could be flown at 90% power. By then I was back in Georgia. He arranged for a pilot to fly to Salina with the diagnostic cable and computer to help diagnose the problem, then had it flown to Southtec. I am waiting to hear what the actual problem was.
Glen Lawler of Southtec, Sam Linton of Lifestyle Aviation, and John Weber from Diamond were all extremely helpful.
Clemens aviation in Wichita is listed as a Diamond Service Provider, but as they told me several times, they no longer are, and weren’t sure if they still had a diagnostic cable.
I have a dongle ordered.

I had similar symptoms on my LH engine last year. ECUs would alert if I went over 90% or thereabouts (i.e. on take-off roll). Diagnosed the over-boost with the dongle and determined that the waste gate actuator wasn't, er, actuating. Ordered new part from DSC, local mechanic swapped it out, and the problem went away.

I carry a dongle, spare wastegate actuator and spare prop governor with me at all times (along with some assorted clips to do the installs). A difficult AOG situation can be easily avoided if you have these tools, a local A&P, and a cell phone to call Diamond support.

To get a dongle, Diamond Canada requires that you attend one of their one week long training courses at a cost of $2,500. You are then eligible buy an actual dongle. Price of dongle not listed on their website. Did everyone here have to do that?

Thanks,
Mike
