DA40's AFM was updated on Sep 18th

Post by Determinant »

Hello everyone,

I'm new here to the forum but I've read a lot of articles in the past to help me decide on my plane purchase. I got my DA40 2010 XLS in early August and I'm based at KPAO/KFUL. Just got my account approved from the admin and I'm very happy to join this forum!

Not sure if this sector of the forum is the right place to make my first post, but I'm sharing something interesting anyways. (Hope you folks will forgive me if that's what this place is for.)

As the title suggests, my friend and I found the Diamond's official website changed it's AFM for DA40 to rev 10. And there seems to be some tiny changes here and there across the entire AFM, including some page layouts (and checklist items!) If you don't know this yet, give it a look, because the previous revision (rev 9) was dated in 2014.

Yes. I just got my updates and revisions (printed in yellow) in my AFM and printed out revision 10 last week removing all the revisions I just installed a month earlier. I “love” the 8-1/2 by 6 size of the pages, but can print them all out pretty fast now that I have a method For my madness. 🤪

You mean half size of letter? Yeah I love it too. I use that for all my printed checklists as it works pretty well for the kneeboard that I use in the cramped cockpit of DA40...

Are you based in KMHR? I usually go there for maintenance as somebody introduced me to EVA repair shop and they're really good. Got a few things repaired right after my ferry flight.

I am confused by their revision indicator margin bars in this one, as they are all over the place when they say exactly the same as the prior revision in most areas.

Yes, I’m based at KMHR in the shade hangar. Ricky Hsieh at EVA has a good team and they really know Diamonds well without a lot of BS, because they also support the EVA airlines flight school. They generally are pretty available without a long wait and do solid work. One quirk with them is every W&B will be expensive (about $700) as they always up it the plane on scales. Even for an almost 3 lb change for Powerflow exhaust that could have been a paper exercise. I highly recommend them overall, but don’t use them so much I need to start waiting ;-)

For the AFM, I use 8-1/2 x 11 then cut to the custom 8-1/2 x 6 which is 1/2 inch wider than half letter size. That’s the same size as what’ shipped originally.

I think they just consolidate so you don’t need to include all the revisions separately which is why it’s the same in most cases.

Yep, I agreed on the consolidation and lack of needing the included temp revisions, etc., but they include in each new revision little black bars on the left side for anything that has been changed this time around. For the last update, the bars were all actually different stuff. For this update, the bars are all over the place, including many places where the wording is exactly the same as the prior revision-making it difficult to see what is actually changed.

Steve, can you share a couple examples?

I see now what the issue is--in the new revision, even minor formatting changes, such as and extra blank line or an extra space, have triggered the revision bar. Pretty much the entire new revision is slightly different in formatting, so the revision bars are totally useless from an information change point of view. Demos attached.
