G1000 Components under back luggage compartment.

Post by Don »

Hi All,
Does anyone have a photo of the G1000 components that are mounted under the rear luggage compartment? My plane is going into annual and I would like to unplug the connecters, clean all the contacts and then reconnect. If so, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Regards,
Don

Here are a couple of photos for you. These are from a 2008 DA40-XLS, which is very similar your plane. Depending on which G1000 options you have installed, there could be differences.

Perfect! Thank you Paul.
The issue we are having is on the PFD. When changing radio frequencies, the big outer ring knob that controls the large numbers works fine. The smaller inner knob the controls the smaller numbers to the right of the decimal point only works intermittently. Currently, we are using the MFD knobs to change radio frequencies. Now I just need to figure which component in the rack controls the radio so it can be removed and the cleaned. I am hoping that it is a simple fix. If not, then on to the Garmin dealer.

You are saying the MFD frequency control works but the PFD frequency control doesn't? Unfortunately that likely means the PFD needs to be replaced. Re-racking is quite unlikely to help (I mean, there's a very, very small chance, but quite unlikely.) We also had a knob go on our MFD and had to replace the whole thing.

Edit: though there's a *chance* it's just that the knob is slipping on the control rod. You can order replacement knobs from Sarasota Avionics: https://sarasotaavionics.com/avionics/g ... eplacement. Definitely cheaper than a new PFD, if everything else is working.

You might try swapping knobs from your MFD to your PFD. Then replace a set if PFD works. Usually you can feel if the knob is slipping on the indented shaft within

Actually, I do not think the knob is slipping. When turning the inner knob I can hear and feel the knob clicking when rotating. Also, on the last few flights, we would dial in a frequency on the MFD. Then, after a few minutes, the small numbers to the right of the decimal point would skip a few numbers on its own and change the frequency. Example: So say we were on KTOA tower, 133.075. Then it would skip on its own to 133.055. I know, weird.

That could be downright dangerous if you don't notice it immediately. Did the frequency actually change or just the display?

Rich, the Frequency actually changed on both the PFD and MFD. It only has done this a few times and just happened more recently.
So far we have not made a radio call on a error changed frequency. It was noticed and caught prior to by my copilot wife. The CRM training we both have taken together pays off.

I was thinking more about missing an important incoming call.

Cleaning the contacts certainly won't hurt anything, but this does sound more and more like an issue with the PFD; seeming a processing delay of some sort. I've seen some similar gremlins with ours and replacement was the only resolution. But hopefully your experience will be different.
